Paying at the gas station with your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch is possible using Apple Pay. Since the retailer does not need to know your debit or credit card information, this is actually a fairly safe method of payment. Using your Apple Pay account at the gas station is possible in several ways.
Contactless payment – the use of an NFC reader at the gas pump
- Step 1: The first step is to align your vehicle with the gas pump
- Step 2: Locate the Apple Pay logo or the NFC symbol on the gas pump. This means you can use Apple Pay to pay for gas.
- Step 3: Place your iPhone close to the NFC symbol and the Apple Pay app should open automatically.
- Step 4: You can activate the pump with Touch ID, Face ID, or a passcode depending on your iPhone security settings.
- Step 5: Once you receive the fill-up message, follow the instructions on the pump display and fill up with gas. You can use this at any gas station that accepts Apple Pay.
Let me now discuss your phone’s authentication process. You will have different ways to authenticate your payment depending on your iPhone settings:
- You can use Face ID on your iPhone if it’s enabled:
- The phone will approve the transaction just by looking at it
- Make sure your device is close to the screen of the payment system
- The phone will show a green checkmark after a few seconds
- Your contactless payment has been approved when you see a checkmark.
You can do this if you have Touch ID instead of Face ID:
- You can unlock your wallet by pressing your thumb on the thumbprint sign
- Make sure your device is close to the payment terminal.
- Your phone will show a green checkmark after a few seconds
- You’re approved if you see the checkmark.
You can also do this using your Apple Watch instead of your iPhone. It is as simple as following these steps on an Apple Watch:
- Please double-click the side button to begin
- Choose the card you’d like to use
- Make sure your Apple Watch is close to the contactless reader at the gas station
- Your phone will beep and buzz when payment is complete.
With The Gas Station App, You Can Pay With Apple Pay
Another way to pay at gas stations is via an app that works with the gas company. Many gas stations have their own applications for purchasing gasoline and making payments. For example, Exon Mobile, Shell Speedway, BPme & Amoco Gas have their own apps.
To accomplish this, you should download the app of the gas company where you will fuel your vehicle. After signing up, add Apple Pay as a payment method to the application. You can then complete the payment in the app at the gas station without the need to use an NFC reader. As an example, here is the procedure for an Apple Pay transaction at a Shell gas station:
- The first step is to download the Shell App and add Apple Pay as a payment method
- In step two, after lining your car up against the gas pump, open the Shell App and confirm the pump’s identification number.
- When you use the Shell app, you’ll be able to pay using the ‘Apple Pay’ method so you won’t have to wait in line for your fuel.
- Wait until you see the ‘Start Fuelling’ notification.
- When your car is done filling up with gas, the app will automatically deduct the charge from your chosen payment method.

Charges When Paying With Apple Pay At A Gas Station
You can use Apple Cash instead of a linked credit card at a gas station using the scan method. Although this method works well, make sure you have enough Apple Cash in your account to cover any hold charges.
You’ll get charged a hold charge of up to $150 to check if you have enough money on your Card or Apple Pay wallet. This is because gas prices aren’t known in advance. This will put a temporary charge on your account for a sum that may be much higher than the amount of fuel you have refilled. As a result, this hold charge is reversed later on and only the amount payable for the fuel is actually deducted.
